Locomotory Movements of the Hind Limbs in Rabbits after Isolation of the Lumbosacral Cord.

چکیده
In my earlier experiments with spinal cats (1962) I established that the isolated lumbosacral cord is able to co-ordinate walking movements of the hind limbs. In cats this part of the cord possesses a high degree of autonomy. It seemed interesting to know whether in rabbits the isolated lumbosacral cord is also able to maintain these functions. It was especially important to establish whether the spinal rabbit can carry out the typical jumping movements with hind limbs, which serve, as is well known, in the act of progression in normal conditions. According to Laughton (1924) the synchronous bilateral jumping movements of the hind limbs seen in normal rabbits should be replaced by alternate rhythmical movements in spinal rabbits. After decerebration Laughton made a transection of the spinal cord in rabbits at the limit of the thoracic cord. The dorsal cutaneous nerves, which innervate the hind limbs, were isolated and prepared for stimulation. Reflexmovements of the hind limbs were observed in response to electrical stimulation with faradic currents and mechanical stimulation by pinching one toe of the hind feet. Such reflexes consist of ipsilateral flexion and crossed extension of the hind limbs. He could not provoke any synchronous bilateral movement of the hind limbs in his rabbits after transection of the cord. Laughton concludes that in rabbits the nervous mechanism in the lumbosacral cord is so arranged that it can innervate only the alternate rhythmical movements of the hind limbs. The synchronous bilateral movements of the hind limbs are only possible when the cord is in connexion with the supraspinal centres of the brain-stem, which lies probably in the pontine region. Whereas Laughton made a transection of the spinal cord in decerebrated rabbits and then examined the reflex-movements of the hind limbs by excitation of the sensory nerves, I carried out chronic experiments in which I studied the walking movements of the spinal animal, as I had already done in my investigations of spinal pigeons and spinal cats.

Automatic activity of the locomotor centres of the lumbar cord in lizards.
My previous experiments with salamanders {Triton cristatus; ten Cate, 1927) and tortoises (Testudo graeca; ten Cate, 1937) have shown that, after transection of the spinal cord in the thoracic region, locomotor movements of the hind limbs can be observed under favourable conditions while the front limbs remain motionless. These alternating movements are well co-ordinated but last only a short t...
متن کاملSystemic Effects of Experimental Spinal Cord Injury on Bone Healing in Rabbit
Bone loss after spinal cord injury leads to increased fragility of bone and subsequent risk for low-trauma fractures in the sublesional parts of the body. Although in such injuries upper limbs are normally innervated, bone loss may occur in the upper extremities. The present study was designed to determine the systemic effects of spinal cord injury on the fracture healing of upper limbs in rabb...
متن کاملUltrastructural Observations on Lumbar Spinal Cord Recovery After Lesion in Lizard Indicates Axonal Regeneration and Neurogenesis
After lumbar spinal cord transection, lizards recover some un-coordinated movements of the hind limbs including some walking ability. The transected spinal cord was examined using electron microscopy to study the degree of regeneration. A bridge tissue located between the two proximal and distal ends of the transected spinal cord, representing the regenerated cord, was found at 29-45 days post-...
متن کاملObservations on Lumbar Spinal Cord Recovery after Lesion in Lizards Indicates Regeneration of a Cellular and Fibrous Bridge Reconnecting the Injured Cord
The lumbar spinal cords of lizards were transected, but after the initial paralysis most lizards recovered un-coordinated movements of hind limbs. At 25-45 days post-lesion about 50% of lizards were capable of walking with a limited coordination. Histological analysis showed that the spinal cord was transected and the ependyma of the central canal formed two enlargements to seal the proximal an...
متن کاملA New Nonlinear Autoregressive Exogenous (NARX)-Based Intra-Spinal Stimulation Approach to Decode Brain Electrical Activity for Restoration of Leg Movement in Spinally-Injured Rabbits
This study aims at investigation of stimulation by using intra-spinal signals decoded from electrocorticography (ECoG) assessments to restore the movements of the leg in an animal model of spinal cord injury (SCI). The present work comprised of three steps. First, ECoG signals and the associated leg joint changes (hip, knee, and ankle) in sedated healthy rabbits were recorded in different trial...
